Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a moist, flat, wooded area along a trail near the Gunpowder River.  Other plants growing nearby include Smilax glauca, Lonicera japonica, Stellaria pubera, and Lindera benzoin.  

These small flowers are positioned in terminal clusters.  The flowers have five petals and 10 bright-yellow stamens.  The leaves form a basal rosette around the flower stalk. 

 

 

2. Claytonia virginica

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a moist, flat, wooded area along a trail near the Gunpowder River.  Other plants growing nearby include Podophyllum peltatum, Rosa multiflora, and Dicentra cucullaria 

This flower stalk has a pair of thin, linear leaves that are succulent.  The flowers have five petals.

This small tree has opposite, compound leaves, each with three toothed leaflets.  The flowers are clusters of drooping flowers with five white petals and yellow stamens.

These flowers are polypetalous with five petals and sepals.  The leaves are deeply lobed and the overall outline of the leaf is circular. 

 

 

5. Uvularia sessilifolia

Location: Baltimore County, MD

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a moist, flat, wooded area along a trail near the Gunpowder River.  Other plants growing nearby include Podophyllum peltatum and Erythronium americana 

These pale yellow/creamy flowers droop from beneath leaves at the end of the stem.  The leaves are sessile and their bases do not surround the stem.  The stem branches and is not jointed.

These small, white flowers have 6 parts and are clustered at the end of the stem.  The flower cluster branches.  The leaves alternate along the zigzagging stem.  Before blooming, the flower cluster drooped at the end of the stem. 

 

 

7. Vaccinium corymbosum

Found on the campus of The Bryn Mawr School, at the edge of a wooded area along Stony Run in Baltimore, MD 21210.  Located in a flat, sunny area along a trail.

This tall shrub has distinctive, globe-shaped flowers.  The leaves are entire and ovate.

 

 

8. Acer negundo

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the paved trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a flat, wooded area near a hillside along the trail.

This small tree has opposite leaves and three leaflets.  The leaflets are of different shapes and sizes. 

 

 

9. Aesculus glabra

Location: Baltimore City, MD

Found on the campus of The Bryn Mawr School, near the edge of a wooded area along Stony Run in Baltimore, MD 21210.  Located in a flat, partially-sunny area at the edge of the woods.

This tree has opposite leaves with five palmately-compound leaflets.  The tree has clusters of yellow flowers.

 

     

10. Ranunculus ficaria

Found on the campus of The Bryn Mawr School, near the edge of a wooded area along Stony Run in Baltimore, MD 21210.  Located in a moist, flat area at the edge of the woods.

These flowers have eight shiny petals and heart-shaped leaves.  The flowers and leaves have long stalks.  

 

 

11. Stellaria pubera

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a moist, flat, wooded area along a trail near the Gunpowder River.  Other plants growing nearby include Smilax glauca, Lonicera japonica, Rosa multiflora, and Lindera benzoin.  

These flowers have five sepals and five petals that are deeply cleft (almost appears to be 10 petals).  The petals are longer than the sepals, and the leaves are in pairs.

This plant has basal leaves that are highly dissected, and the flowers are heart-shaped with pointed spurs.

 

 

13. Panax trifolius

These small white flowers have five parts and are in a rounded umbel.  The plant has three whorled leaves that each have five leaflets. 

 

 

14. Mertensia virginica

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in moist, flat, wooded areas along the trail near the Gunpowder River.  Other plants growing nearby include Panax trifolius and Claytonia virginica.

These blue, bell-shaped flowers unroll from a nodding cluster.  The oval-shaped leaves are smooth, and the stem is succulent. 

 

 

 

15. Cercis canadensis

1) Found on the campus of the Village of Cross Keys in Baltimore, MD 21210.  Located in an open, grassy area along the driveway. 

2) Found in a wooded area along power lines that cross the road near 9512 Dundawan Road in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located at the edge of a wooded area.

3) Found within Gunpowder State Park, on the opposite side of the Gunpowder River from the trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a moist, flat area at the edge of the river.

This small tree has pink, pea-shaped flowers.  The leaves are alternate and heart-shaped.

 

 

16. Cardamine concatenata (Michx.)

Location: Baltimore County, MD

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a moist, flat, wooded area along a trail near the Gunpowder River.  Other plants growing nearby include Erythronium americana  and Claytonia virginica.

These flowers are in terminal clusters and have four petals.  The stem has a whorl of three leaves that are deeply-divided into three segments.

 

 

17. Cardamine angustata O.E. Schulz

     Slender Toothwort

     Brassicaceae

Location: Baltimore County, MD

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the paved trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located on a wooded slope along the trail.  Other plants growing nearby include Erythronium americana  and Claytonia virginica.

Very similar to Cardamine concatenata, these flowers are in a terminal cluster and have four petals.  The stem has a pair of small leaves that are divided into three slender segments; the basal leaves are divided into three broad segments.

 

 

18. Sassafras albidum

Location: Baltimore County, MD

Found in a wooded area behind the home at 12 Lovelock Ct in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located on a hillside at the edge of the wooded area.  Other plants growing nearby include Lonicera japonica, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Acer negundo.

This medium-sized tree has three shapes of leaves: no lobes, two lobes, and three lobes.  The twigs are green. 

 

 

19. Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal

Location: Baltimore County, MD

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a moist, flat, wooded area along a trail near the Gunpowder River.  Other plants growing nearby include Staphylea trifolia, Acer rubra, Mertensia virginica, and Fagus grandifolia.

This small tree has long, naked, wooly, reddish terminal buds.  The flowers are maroon and more than one inch across.

 

     

20. Taxodium distichum

Location: Baltimore City, MD

Found on the campus of The Bryn Mawr School, at the end of the driveway at 109 W. Melrose Ave in Baltimore, MD 21210.  Located in full sun in a flat, grassy area.  This tree was most likely planted (not naturally occurring).

This tall tree has flat, pliable needles that vary in size and are green on both sides.  The needles are on slender twigs, and both the needles and twigs are shed each year. 

 

 

21. Euonymus alata

Location: Baltimore County, MD

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the paved trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a flat, wooded area near a hillside along the trail. 

This shrub has green twigs with corked wings.  The yellow flowers contain a nectar capsule.  The leaves are opposite and toothed.

 

 

22. Rhododendron periclymenoides (Michx.) Shinners

     Pink Azalea / Pinxter Flower

     Ericaceae

Location: Baltimore County, MD

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the paved trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a rocky area on a wooded hillside.  Other plants growing nearby include Liriodendron tulipifera, Fagus grandifolia, Carpinus caroliniana, and Acer negundo.

This shrub has flowers with long pink stamens and pistil that project upward from the tubed corolla.  The flowers have a subtle fragrance and bloom as the new leaves emerge.  The oblong leaves are alternate and have entire margins with fine hairs. 

 

 

23.Veratrum viride

Found within Gunpowder State Park, off the trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a moist, flat, wooded area beside a stream.  Other plants growing nearby include Podophylum peltatum, Lindera benzoin, Fagus grandifolia, and Liriodendron tulipifera.

These yellow-green, star-shaped flowers have six parts and are in tall clusters.  The leaves are large and deeply-ribbed.  The leaves were conspicuous in early spring.  

 

 

24. Viburnum prunifolium

     Cherry Leaf Viburnum / Smooth Blackhaw

Location: Baltimore County, MD

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a moist, flat, wooded area along a trail near the Gunpowder River.  Other plants growing nearby include Viburnum dentatum, Fagus grandifolia, and Staphylea trifolia.

This tall shrub has opposite leaves that are elliptical and somewhat pointed.  The leaves are toothed and resemble those of a cherry tree.  The small flowers are in clusters.    

 

 

25. Galium aparine

Location: Baltimore City, MD

Found on the campus of The Bryn Mawr School, within a wooded area along Stony Run in Baltimore, MD 21210.  Located in a moist, wooded area near a trail.  Other plants growing nearby include Symplocarpus foetidus, Aesculus glabra, and Sambucus canadensis.

This plant has square stems that are bristly, and the leaves are in whorls of mostly eight (sometimes six).  The flowers have four petals and grow from the axils of the leaves. 

 

 

26. Sambucus canadensis

Found on the campus of The Bryn Mawr School, within a wooded area along Stony Run in Baltimore, MD 21210.  Located in a moist, wooded area near a trail.  Other plants growing nearby include Symplocarpus foetidus, Aesculus glabra, and Galium aparine.

This shrub has opposite compound leaves that have five toothed leaflets.  The gray twigs have conspicuous rust-colored lenticels.  The flowers (which have not yet bloomed) are in dense clusters.  

 

 

27. Rhus typhina

Location: Baltimore County, MD

Found in a wooded area behind the home at 12 Lovelock Ct in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located on a hillside at the edge of the wooded area.  Other plants growing nearby include Lonicera japonica, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Acer negundo.

This small, crooked tree has alternate compound leaves with hairy leaf stems and twigs.  The leaf stem has a milky sap when broken.  The fruits are small, red, hairy and arranged in a spike.  The fruit spike on these trees is from last year, and some are bent over.    

 

 

28. Robinia pseudo-acacia

Location: Baltimore City, MD

Found on the campus of The Bryn Mawr School, at the edge of a wooded area along Stony Run in Baltimore, MD 21210.  Located in a flat, sunny area at the edge of the woods.

This tree has alternate, pinnately-compound leaves.  The leaflets have rounded tips and the twigs have thorns.  The white flowers are pea-shaped. 

 

 

29. Hydrophyllum virginianum

Location: Baltimore County, MD

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located in a moist, flat, wooded area along the trail near the Gunpowder River.  Other plants growing nearby include Erythronium americana, Fagus grandifolia, Toxicodendron radicans, and Geranium maculatum.

The leaves are spotted and deeply divided.  The clustered flowers have styles that are two-cleft and stamens that protrude from the corolla. 

 

 

30. Adiantum pedatum

     Northern Maidenhair Fern

Location: Baltimore County, MD

Found within Gunpowder State Park, along the paved trail that begins at the end of Dundawan Rd in Perry Hall, MD 21236.  Located on a wooded slope along the trail.  Other plants growing nearby include Viburnum acerifolium, Polystichum acrostichoides, and Arisaema triphyllum.

The stipe and rachis on this fern are black and wiry, and the stipe forks in two.
