- Characteristic of this family: A black triangular stipule off of the leaf base

- hard/tough, leathery leaves (coraceous) basically means it is stiff and doesn't bend
- red drupe (hard with pit) berries

Description:
- smooth barks with splits called lenticels (gaps to let air in the bark).

- needles come off like pegs
- long cones = female
- small cones = male
- cones are unarmed, which would make it a yellow pine.
